Big Brands, Small Companies | Claudia Sans, David Nigel Flynn, and Gabriella Matheny | Coffee Retail Summit

The continued growth of specialty coffee retailers across Europe and beyond has seen many small businesses enjoying reputations that live far beyond their immediate community of customers.

Branding, events, digital engagement, packaging, anchor visuals in the design of the space: is investing in all these things critical for success in a market more accustomed to the novelty of latte art? SCA Marketing Director and former Marketing Manager of Da Matteo Coffee in Gothenberg, Pernilla Gard is joined by Claudia Sans of El Magnifico in Barcelona, David Nigel Flynn from Belleville in Paris and Gabriella Matheny of Lykke in Stockholm.

About the Presenters

Claudia Sans, Quality Control
Cafes el Magnifico

A graduate in Literary Studies from the University of Barcelona, Claudia Sans has worked at Cafes El Magnifico since 2014—though Sans has considered the roastery and cafe home since long before her coffee career began.

Coffee, coffee sacks and coffee roasting have been part of Claudia’s life since she was a little girl; watching her father work and developing an acute understanding of the inner workings of Cafés El Magnífico helped shape her view of coffee and inform her approach to this day.

Claudia leads Quality Control in Cafés El Magnifico – roasting samples, tasting and selecting seasonal coffees to add to the coffee menu. She also develops control protocols for the quality control team, updates the taste profiles of selected coffees and leads sensory training courses.

Claudia is a curious person who appreciates the importance of continuous training that the business of specialty coffee demands today.

David Nigel Flynn, Founder
Belleville Brûlerie Paris

An American in Paris, David Nigel Flynn has been deeply involved in the rise of French specialty coffee. After co-founding the celebrated Téléscope Café in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, David launched Belleville Brûlerie Paris in 2013, a specialty coffee roaster with a distinctly French je ne sais quoi. David continues to lead Belleville as CEO focusing on branding and coffee sourcing. A design and philosophy major who stumbled into a career in coffee, David is fascinated by the ways in which coffee culture differs from place to place and committed to finding new ways to present Specialty Coffee to consumers.

Gabriella Matheny, Marketing Manager
Lykke

Gabriella Matheny is the marketing manager of Lykke Kaffegårdar. She has previously worked for Johan & Nyström coffee roasters, as well as Omnipollo beer brewery.
